Same spiral pattern math that one encounters with spiral galaxies, I believe. I have grown South African succulents for years to enjoy their evolution from seedlings to adults. Aloes are a little outside my area of specialization, but seeing photos like this motivates me to travel to Africa to see all this before habitat destruction, goat grazing, etc., advance any further.
