Cool. But you’re going to have to rename your comment thread, “For Masochists Only.”

Ooo, international infamy. Wait, you had something in a Brit mag a few years ago, no?
At least they’ll pay you for it. They will, right? I’m wondering how a contract with payment amount contingent on amount, degree, and species of abuse would work.

Most people in the blog world I inhabit have read this post by Chris Clarke. It’s one of the most moving pieces I’ve read in a long time. Today I went to The Guardian’s webpage, and there’s the name

Oh, sure...sell your soul to the MSM for a little fame and glory. Your friends in the blogosphere just weren’t enough for you, huh?

PZ: They came to me, and offered me money. What could I say?
Roxanne, I’m sure the other Guardian would have been all over the story if Morin had worked for PG&E;.
Ron, the other Brit mag was New Internationalist.

It seems unfortunate to me that the little summary the Guardian put under the headline really blunts the impact of your writing.

That deck did make me wince a very little bit. But I understand the editor’s need to pull people into the story.
Anyway, that was by no means the worst headline-writer treatment my writing’s ever gotten in a daily paper.

This ran on page 6-7 of the G2 section, which is where all the good stuff is. There’s a teaser on the first page of the section, “Chris Clarke: My friend the serial killer. Page 6” and also one for “Liz Hurley: I don’t have time for cosmetic surgery.” There’s also a piece inside on Andrea Dworkin, and “Q.: Camilla or Diana: Who’s done the least for feminism?”
The spread has a couple of side items on it too, but otherwise it’s all Chris’s text (with one sentence deleted and GOP explained), the 72 pt headline “I helped him soundproof the van...” and a huge picture of “Ray”. Too bad they had to use his pic instead of the author.
(BTW, did anyone notice in the Texas inmate certificate Chris linked to, the victim’s race is listed as “white female”?)
So, there’s the company Chris is keeping today. Will he even talk to us when he’s internationally famous?

Just once, and it was five years ago, and they made me wince hard when I saw what they did to my lede.

Hey, congratulations! That’s just about my favorite newspaper, so I’m way more impressed than if it had merely been the NY Times or something (let alone The New Republic — *shudder*).
