Zeke, last week

Last week in Fernandez Park, Pinole. This is his usual stance, though his left rear foot is usually more tucked under his abdomen. (The tripod thing.)

It’s gotten to the point where I’m tempted to take a veterinary receipt on walks with me, I’m so self-conscious about how thin he is: I feel like someone’s going to call animal control about the “starved dog.”

But everyone in the park knows Zeke.

I'm sorry, but the comment period for this entry has ended.

He doesn’t look starved.  He just looks old, and even happy in an old-guy way, which is different from a puppy way.

Sweet old puppy dog.

Yond Zeke has a lean and hungry look. But he’s still a handsome devil.

But surely anyone who knows anything about dogs (or mammals) knows they generally thin out when they’re elderly?

Miss Patsy’s aged poodle (15) has to be carried up and down stairs and anywhere farther than a block.  He also falls off the bed (and so now we have our mattress on the floor--sigh--back to college days) about once a day.

zeke doesn’t look starved—just old, but still happy to be out and about with his guy.

Bless Zeke.  I do enjoy your writing, Chris, but I have to confess that I visit all the more often in order to check on Zeke.

Zeke!  I see a bit of a smile on the old guy.

I wonder if Zeke is part wolf.. He looks quite a lot like the coyotes here in Manitoba.

Bless his heart.  Good boy.

Was there ever a head more ripe for gently pattin’ than that?

I think not.

ear skirtches—i’m thinking he wants those, too.

Just as an aside,te image size is >200kb. There are ways to reduce this size for web purposes without affecting the image. For starters, since you’re displaying it at width="400" height="300", you might reduce the picture size. Second, You might be able to reduce the dpi (dots per inch).  Web pages only display at 72dpi while photos might be stored at 300 dpi. Finally, there are compression algorithms that will reduce the image size somewhat magically (i.e., I can’t explain the mathematics ;-).  I guess you’d need a photo editor but they’re pretty common and inexpensive these days.

Anyhow, with quick downloads, most people would have waited for the image, but people on slower machines might not have. It’s still a good idea to have web pages below 50Kb and even below 25Kb where possible.

I’ve been foolishly relying on Flickr’s image compression to do the trick.

Ah, well. One more step.

Please give his snout a scritch for me.  It’s quite a handsome snout.  And please don’t forget the ears!

I wonder if Zeke is part wolf.. He looks quite a lot like the coyotes here in Manitoba.

I was walking with Zeke and Becky the day of that photo, and at one point a woman in a truck pulled up and said that she and her husband sometimes see Chris walking him and were wondering if he was a wolf. You can’t see it in this photo, but his tail reinforces that image a lot.

Oh, those endless “helpful” comments and the occasional snide observation.  Drive-by pet keeping is the worst.

LEAVES!  ZEKE!

PS.  I found out today about the existence of BSG webisodes!  Did you know of these?  If so, why did you not share?
