Creek Running North

Chris, I write to you from urban Los Angeles, the corner of 3rd and Broadway—historically the busiest pedestrian street in Los Angeles.  Real pedestrian street, not a Promenade or CityWalk we’ve come to pave as a thruway between multiplex and Abercrombie&Fitch;. 

On weekends Broadway teems with shoppers, just as it did, decades ago, when the Million Dollar Theater on the corner had stage shows and peliculas and Mariachi Campero as its house band.  But Sunday, when I was in the Farmacia Million Dollar, a place for cures and prescriptions and sundries, I was the only person in the store.  No one was in line to see the curandero.  No senior was filling a prescription.  The woman who runs the place said, “Have you ever seen this?  Nobody here.  On a Sunday?” She has her staff taking their vacation time, one after another.  From an opposite world to your creek, I agree, depression.
