Chris: Thanks so much for the happy thoughts and well-wishing!

I’m sure it will be fine.  Wind speeds are way up, but that’s not a big concern.  We won’t sustain a direct hit (whew!), and as long as trees don’t fall all will be well.  The main issue is power, but I have flashlights and candles so that’s surmountable.

What happened with your sister’s Hurricane Frances encounter?  Everything OK?

Everyone’s fine. They lost power for only a couple hours in the middle of the night.  Her oldest two daughters spent the night in a sleep-over. Emailed her this morning, and she said she still hadn’t heard from them.

That seemed to me to be the definition of relaxed parenting: yoour two eldest kids spend the night somewhere else in a hurricane, and you’re blase about not hearing from them by noon.

So, is “relaxed parenting” a bad thing?  The kids were only 100 feet away, at the next-door-neighbor’s house…
