Apparently, we’re supposed to respond with apologetic good manners to the lies they promulgate in their ongoing subjugation of our country.

Gosh, did I accidentally get some faceprints on your boots there? Nasty of me.

Note: A database glitch in 2008 ate a bunch of archived comments. Don't be offended if yours isn't here, or confused if the conversation seems disjointed. Thanks!

I figure, apropos of that, and of a recent post on bad language at Shakespeare’s Sister, that when people are reduced to challenging your position on the basis of the words you use, they are tacitly admitting that they don’t have a leg to stand on.

Either that or they’re just so wound up in acting superior that they don’t care about the actual issues.

(Did you really mean “faceprints” and “your boots”?  This is eliciting some very odd images in my head!)

Aw, do I really have to stomp on that human face forever? What kind of bullshit workout regimen is this?

I will admit that the existence of American Pride hall monitors in other people’s comment threads is a puzzling sociological phenomenon.

By: By norbizness on 2005 10 10

Has nothing to do with “American Pride” hall monitoring, Norbizness.  And you know it.

It has to do with this douche dismissing Karol’s response with no thought whatever.

But then, anybody who uses “they” and “promulgate” and “subjugating our country” doesn’t believe in democracy, anyway.  Unless, of course, his side is in charge.  In which case, FUCK YEAH!

What a clatch of cunts.

By: By Jeff G on 2005 10 10

Unfortunately, Jeff, Karol has a history at that site.  Though her words may be couched more “politely” she herself has said some awfully offensive things in the past.  She’s earned a dismissive response at this point.

I also must note that it’s a little odd for someone to defend a woman by calling her male critic a “douche” and her female critics “cunts.”

By: By Rana on 2005 10 10

Hi! I am progressive and I want to know what is so wrong with Islam and burkas. If people want to subject women to slavery it’s their own right. I thought we were about tolerence??? Let’s let the fascist right wing (like Jeff G) whine about what’s slavery and all that. Our job is to defeat the neocons and withdraw the troops (yup, i’m talking surrender) at all costs.

By: By True Progressvie on 2005 10 10

Everyone having fun counting the ways in which Jeff’s response is blatantly hypocritical? I’m up to four, myself.

Oh, I’m sorry. It was intra-commenter civility hall monitor (it’s a different-colored sash; I apologize), with the fate of The Free American Left riding on it.

As Marmaduke’s owner has learned very often, Jeff, one should be hesitant in criticizing the size of piles left by other people’s dogs.

“Subjugation”??????  You see, this is why right-wingers think that you’re insane.  People living in America are more free than anyone else on the planet, and anyone in history.

Subjugation is when you aren’t allowed to vote.  Subjugation is when you aren’t allowed to leave.

Subjugation is when the dictator’s sons can rape and murder as they please without anyone stopping them.

Subjugation is when you can be put in a forced-labor camp for criticizing El Presidente

Subjugation is when the President-for-Life can send his thugs to take your farm

Subjugation is when you can be executed for criticizing the Dear Leader.

People in Cuba, North Korea, Zimbabwe, and Iran are subjugated.  People in Saddam Hussein’s Iraq were subjugated.  You are merely a spoiled leftist

engaging in defamation of your political opponents.

The next time you say something like this, think about those who are truly oppressed and ask what can be done to help them

By: By Jay on 2005 10 10

It’s the wingnut wackyparser at work! No negative word can properly ever be construed to apply to our country as long as there’s someone worse out there! U! S! A! U! S! A!

Main Entry: sub·ju·gate

Pronunciation: ‘s&b-ji-“gAt

Function: transitive verb

Inflected Form(s): -gat·ed; -gat·ing

Etymology: Middle English, from Latin subjugatus, past participle of subjugare, from sub- + jugum yoke — more at YOKE

1 : to bring under control and governance as a subject : CONQUER

2 : to make submissive : SUBDUE

Sounds like the GOP/Talibaptist program for the US to me.

Oh, and everyone take it easy on the question marks for a while. Jay used up a month’s supply.

I think you’ve struck a nerve, Chris!

Must be on the right track.  *grin*

By: By Rana on 2005 10 10

Oh, the outrage, the outrage they feel when someone hands them a tiny taste of what they’ve been spewing over the political landscape for twenty years.

It’s sort of like being attacked by four-week-old basset puppies. Except less cute.

By: By Chris Clarke on 2005 10 10

Think the last couple chapters of 1984.

Actually, it had me thinking of the ridiculous rather than the sublime: “Neddie! How dare you strike Moriarty in the army boot with the full force of your teeth!”

By: By Mentis Fugit on 2005 10 10

Chris:

Oh, the outrage, the outrage they feel when someone hands them a tiny taste of what they’ve been spewing over the political landscape for twenty years.

The outrage?  What in the world are you talking about?  Wry amusement? Perhaps.

Rana:

when people are reduced to challenging your position on the basis of the words you use, they are tacitly admitting that they don’t have a leg to stand on.

No Rana, they’re just reminding you that words have meaning.  If you use subjugation in the context of describing the current political climate in the United States, you either don’t know what the word means or are totally freakin’ clueless.

Getting called to task for completely inappropriate choice of words is not surrendering one’s position, but merely pointing out the intellectual bankruptcy of the opposing viewpoint.

By: By Krusty Krab on 2005 10 10

The argument of some above reminds me of those who were outraged at the description of internment camps that Japanese-Americans were held in as concentration camps.

The argument went something along the lines of “They weren’t concentration camps! They were just camps where people were gathered into a manageable area! It’s not like they had OVENS!”

By: By craig on 2005 10 10

As opposed to the completely legitimate use of the words “what a clatch of cunts” to denote wry amusement, no doubt.

Krusty, it’s benefit of the doubt time, so I’ll send you off to this page to let you know what I meant by “onging subjugation”.

Still a lot of freedom here, no doubt. I use mine every day, and I’m glad for it. And the right here harbors a nascent neo-fascist movement that would do away with much of that, in part by shouting down any criticism of the country that isn’‘t couched a certain way.

Am I subjugated? No. Is the country? Increasingly. Will I be? Hope not. I’ll do my best to make sure others aren’t as well.

There’s a little thing called “nuance.”

By: By Chris Clarke on 2005 10 10

You having this problem too? Must be an outbreak of hypocrisy all over the network.

But I for one have totally renounced invective. Repent, you’ll feel better.

Next, we trod over the homeless and disabled. Can’t wait!

By: By KathyF on 2005 10 11

I didn’t say it was a matter of surrendering one’s position, KK, but of not having a defensible one.

If a position is worth defending, and can be defended, one, well, defends it.  With counter-arguments, opposing evidence, and so on.  Simply griping about the language used by one’s opponent, in the absence of that, is either sloppy scholarship or an indication that the critic doesn’t have anything concrete with which to back up his or her assertions, or just wishes to pick a fight instead of inform.

Though I have to admit that when someone yells, “Yer a poopyhead!” it’s more gratifying to retort “No, you’re a poopyhead!” or wail “She called me a poopyhead!” than it is to point out that, no, one’s cranium is not composed of feces, and that one’s accuser must be suffering from sort of cognitive or perceptive disorder.

By: By Rana on 2005 10 11

“Subjugation”?????? You see, this is why right-wingers think that you’re insane.”

People in America are only more free than any other people in history because we constantly fight against oppression and subjugation wherever we find it. Often over the objections of right wingers who think we are insane. I was reading about the Taliban in liberal publications before freeing Islamic women became a Republican priority of any sort. I remember what eager defenders of human rights the Republican Party was when Clinton pushed for action in Bosnia.

Subjugation is when you aren’t allowed to vote.”

So you are actively working to increase funding and distribution of reliable voting machines to high density areas so that in the future no American citizen is forced to stand for 10 hours to vote.

Subjugation is when you aren’t allowed to leave.

Subjugation is when the dictator’s sons can rape and murder as they please without anyone stopping them.

Replace dictator’s sons with stressed out cooks, private contractors and CIA interragators and you get Bagram Abu Graib and Guantanamo. Yes?

Subjugation is when you can be put in a forced-labor camp for criticizing El Presidente

How about if you are merely tailed by the FBI and the DHS for criticizing EL Presidente? Banned from flying for arbitrary reasons you can’t appeal?

“Subjugation is when the President-for-Life can send his thugs to take your farm”

Do they still caount as thugs if they are from a corporation and strong arm your local governmnet into using eminent domain. Robert Mugabe seizure of power came in stages that involved dismantling checks and balances.

“Subjugation is when you can be executed for criticizing the Dear Leader.”

What if you as a citizen can be held indefinitely without trial on the Leader’s say so? Violating that wacky liberal activist principle of Habeas Corpus, the one we ushered in during that summer of love in 1215?

“People in Cuba, North Korea, Zimbabwe, and Iran are subjugated. People in Saddam Hussein’s Iraq were subjugated. You are merely a spoiled leftist

engaging in defamation of your political opponents.”

Our politcal opponents (read you)have consistently supported an administration that has busily stripped the Constitutional protections of due process, equal protection under the law, free speech, association and privacy. Save your invective for the people so cowed by their own fears that they do not recognize what we have here, in the United States, is the beginning of unchecked police powers. Unchecked police powers is what all of your dictatorial governments have in common.

there’s no freedom here chris, think 1984.  really, it’s the bible.

By: By HM on 2005 10 11

Hey… you know, a lot of abused women can’t leave, and are raped and beaten with impunity! Why, in a way, it’s almost as if some women in America are subjugated! what an odd coincidence!

Man.  I kinda miss that troll of a few weeks ago.  (Donna?  Brenda?  something like that).  At least that one was entertaining and could write coherent, grammatical, accurately spelled sentences.  The quality of your trolls is going down, Chris.  These ones are boring and not much fun.  *pout*

I continue to be re-affirmed in my belief that the greater the number of trolls on a given post, the more one is touching on something they really don’t want made public, and which they themselves secretly believe is true.  It’s like a built-in reality meter or something.

By: By Rana on 2005 10 12

I don’t think Brenda was a troll. I think she was sincere, if somewhat paranoiac.
