Save The Tree Octopus!

Another day, another plight: “Although the tree octopus is not officially listed on the Endangered Species List, we feel that it should be added since its numbers are at a critically low level for its breeding needs. The reasons for this dire situation include: decimation of habitat by logging and suburban encroachment; building of roads that cut off access to the water which it needs for spawning; predation by foreign species such as house cats; and booming populations of its natural predators, including the bald eagle and sasquatch. What few that make it to the Canal are further hampered in their reproduction by the growing problem of pollution from farming and residential run-off. Unless immediate action is taken to protect this species and its habitat, the Pacific Northwest tree octopus will be but a memory.”

The Save The Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus site has more information on this beleaguered creature, as well as some nifty website “ribbons” you can use to help spread the word:

I'm sorry, but the comment period for this entry has ended.

Thank you, Chris, once again for your campaign to educate us about various endangered species.  Indeed, I had never heard of this marvelous woodland creature.  And I would have thought that the needles from an evergreen would pierce the tender skin of an octopus.  Fascinating!

I particularly liked the pictures on the site reproduced using “advanced ZPi cephalopod-image processing technology”.  I had no idea that image technology had become species-specific!

Is this of the same family, or at least somehow descended from the Flying Spaghetti Monster?

I never studied the hard sciences, so I’m sort of ignorant about these things.

yikes, carpundit — you beat me to the punch, aaarrgh!

FSMism indeed! there’s a clear link.

I especially like the idea for the car magnet.

now we’re sunk. hordes of people will want to see one. local chambers of commerce will seek to make money with “octopus festivals,” protesters will battle police to “save the octopus,” loggers will eat octopus steaks, and local shops will all sell octopus art.

listen folks, there are no octopi in our trees. nothing to see here. move along. that’s just a strange bird over there.

don’t let the octopus out of the bag.

of course, all of His Noodliness’ creatures should be protected!  please send a car magnet and/or lapel pin asap!

i don’t personally know a house cat that would climb a tree for this sucker, though.  not so long as the kibble holds out, and there are stray rodents around.  the office felines object strenuously to being smeared with the “foreign species predator” stigma, which is nothing but a lie based on longstanding but uninformed species-based prejudices.

I think this is one car magnet I would actually buy.

The FSM, the tree octopus and one more...for a trinity!

I so want one of these guys for my Christmas tree. It looks so festive!

This is a picture of an octopus’s garden in the shade?

A pet you’ve never had, Chris? And to think that here in the Northeast we have to make do with red efts.

Along the same lines:  Chris, have you ever thought about sending Zeke to Dog Island?

“Mmmm, sushi!” said Sasquatch.

We take our conservation very seriously out here in the Northwest.  Thus, if you were to visit the Columbian plateau region you would notice that we do our part to provide adequate species assistance by dropping bicycle wheels into the various streams, creeks, and river habitats.  The spokes and rims offer much protection from careless fishermen and ruthless raptors.

what is this thing?

you are fake suck

What the? This is rubbish! How can it be true? OF course there aren’t any tree octopi, in case you hadn’t noticed there is only one pic of it which is probably faked!!!

this is the fakest thing i have ever seen it is very easy to put a picture of an octpus on a tree!! there is even a website which says that it is fake!! come on yous can’t be that silly and believe it!! you must be stupid!!
