Speaking of the old unclear antecedent problem

image

The above was yoinked from the San Francisco Chronicle’s website a few minutes ago. I like it because no matter how you read it, it’s true.

Let’s just ignore the clumsiness of the “taking this route in educating” passage.

They should enforce a dress code.

That was a soda-to-monitor moment.

I was catching up with my cousin T. the other day, and learned that another cousin ("B.") is now an evangelical Republican creationist minister who is homeschooling his kids.  Apparently B. and his wife spent a lot of cash on some homeschooling curriculum that involves the children watching DVDs of lessons.  T. has a degree in elementary education and was obviously skeptical of this approach’s inflexibility, and asked B. “What if, you know, the kids don’t understand the lesson?”

B.’s answer:  “That’s the great thing!  If they don’t understand it, they can just watch it again!”

Not every way you read it is necessarily true. Who’s ta say African Americans are taking the route of dominating their kids to educate them?

oh crap. that was me craig again.

stoopid cookies.

Isn’t that “uncular antecedent”?

Craig:

Relax, you look nice in a cookie dress.  When me and Miss Patsy establish Camp Sister Womyn Five Spirit East Coast Catskills Branch (in prep for the apocolyptico), men will be allowed, but they’ll have to wear cookie dresses at least once a week.  And pledge allegiance to the matriarchy every morning.  You and Chris are totally invited, it sounds like you both have mad skills.

Oh, i am so confused.  Are they adopting kids to dominate?  Are they dominating whites to educate? Are they homeschooling new adopted white kids??? Wait, who’s they? Oh damn, now i’ve done it; who are they? Yes much, much better, maybe?

When I first read the the paste-in, I thought you meant that the (fuzzy, hence unclear) text on the jihadists was the unclear antecedent - which came first, the war on jihadists in Afghanistan, or the jihadist response to the war on Iraq?  Full circle of self-fulfilling prophecy, indeed - there was no connection between Saddamists and Al Qaeda UNTIL WE CREATED IT - and now we must kill tirelessly to prove that we were right.

I don’t see any ambiguity at all.  They’re clearly stating that African Americans, who were once dominated by whites, are now taking the route of home schooling to educate their kids.

It’s probably not what they meant, but it’s absolutely clear. :P
