Some people believe that the highest secular religious value is liberal democracy ... which, loosely (but still spiritually) speaking, is about the relations of people, how they shall collaborate in both limited and global community. And thus the highest secular value is completely visible, reproducible, describable, and achievable — it is at heart diplomacy and subsumes the best of law and commerce and justice and economics and science and art and everything humanely good under the sun.

Some people believe that the highest function of a human government is ethical relations with both those governed (the provision of “governance” as opposed to “rule") and with other governments ... the establishment of rule of law that is equitable and just and fair for all throughout the world.

Some people believe (as a bedrock value) in world citizenship, and that what is good for the world is what is best for America.

Some people believe the government of a liberal democracy is simply our best voice that we put forth and support as our collective voice.

Some people believe the U.S. Department of State (THE Senior Cabinent Level Agency of this The United States) is the Temple of Liberal Democracy, that titans of democratic thought have walked there, that angels still can be seen in her halls ...

Those people include me.  Now and Forever.

It was obvious even in Jesus’ time that a Temple can only be as good as the Priests within it.  Not all the Priests are bad or wish ill will in the world.  And I believe that only disaster can result if we drive out all the good Priests from our broken Temples.

I have many friends in many agencies of this incredible government struggling to hold on to islands of sanity within their respective domains, prepared to rebuild when the country will allow us.

Just as an individual person can misuse his nervous system by feeding it with toxins, a country can misuse its own brain by filling it with mendacious buffoons.  Hopefully it is a short-term illness and not a long-term addiction. 

And the truth is I was chatting with a friend about the beauty of your site, the brilliance of your writing, the fact that I loved your voice and was envious of your skills and your far-reaching knowledge.  And I wondered about who you might be and how you came to be who you are ... and how we might make easier roads for others to follow you.

I am quite in awe of your blog resume.

And I am truly sorry for any distress or consternation I have inadvertantly caused.

Don’t worry for another second, ehj2. I figured it was something like that. I just take any opportunity I can to joke about government repression. Because, you know, it’s so damn funny.

Eh, I’m not worried.  I’ve already weathered several unexpected “checking up on you” calls from the unemployment folks; quiet non-commenting observers don’t bother me at all.

Now, on the other hand, I do find the “self-publishing” stuff I get occasionally a tad worrying.

but wow, isn’t it surprising to me that sending a link to my friend in a private email can be observed by the world! i guess there is no whispering into another’s ear while in an online world…

Well, there’s privacy and there’s privacy. I could tell someone had read a piece of email with my link in it, but I had no idea who until a couple friendly people stepped up and identified themselves.

Anyway, I suppose someone with more savvy could have gotten more information out of that IP number. It’s wise to consider that one’s online activities may not be as secret as one might think.
