Tres bailecitos

por Jaime Torres.

One of these days I’m going to write the post on “looking for Argentine music that’s not tango.” There’s a lot of it, but you wouldn’t know looking through most “world music” sections of CD stores.

Jaime’s a good start.

I'm sorry, but the comment period for this entry has ended.

Thanks Chris; these are the posts i like.  The ones that make me get up, go into the closet, rummage into the stacks and pull out some music i had forgotten i had.  First one pulled from the Jaime Torres section is from 1987 ~ Naranjitay; wow, thanks for the reminder. Gracias

There’s also the uniquely Argentine soccer/protest songs of the 80s as discussed here. For example

Milicos malparidos, que han hecho
con los desaparecidos
La deuda externa, la corrupción, es la
peor mierda que ha tenido la nación
Que pasó con las Malvinas, esos
chicos ya no están,
no podemos olvidarlos
Cada vez los quiero más

To find CDs with this type of music you should look under Andean, Peruvian, Bolivian. This is music from the Altiplano and spills into the North of Argentina. The instrumentg is a “charango”, made of the shell of an armadillo type of animal. Naturally, after you roast it and eat it…

OT: A while ago, there was a thread about natural-history bloopers in film. I just found a nice blooper on a book cover: here is a book by Karl May, the early-20th-century German writer of “westerns” and other exotic adventure stories; the book is titled “Unter Geiern” that is “Among Vultures”, and shows a Plains Indian in full regalia along with an Old World vulture, with its bare neck and “ruff” around shoulders.

Our national radio “alt music” programming has a fetish about tango - I know what you mean.

Jaime is a thrilling performer.
I wish my old copy of “Charango” had survived getting borrowed once too often.
It seems to be out of print everywhere.
I miss the version of “Sirvinaco” on it because it’s a real taste of the giddiness of bailecito.

And samba doesn’t get enough air either, imho.
Write that post!

Nan, on a completely unrelated topic: do you have an email address where on could send large files?
