Man.  How I’ve missed that color palette - the yellows, greys, and browns. 

Could you tell what kind of hawk it was?

Wow. Looks like a Bateman painting.

Probably a juvenile red-shoulder, from the width of the tail barring, distribution of mottling on back, facial markings (and lack thereof) and ruddy tones on upper back.
