Driving stakes into the heart of the desert

image A note from Laura Cunningham of Basin and Range Watch just popped into my inbox:

Hi Chris,

Kevin and I are at Ivanpah, and BrightSource has starting staking out the entrance road, Colosseum Road, for tortoise exclusion fencing! We are not sure they can do this, but will look into it. Also it appears Phase 1 has stakes put into the desert.

Please spread around as you see fit. Thanks!

Laura

How about someone installing some photovoltaic exclusion fencing along the edge of the road?

BrightSource must have a pretty good idea of the forthcoming decision. By starting the fencing now, they get a jump on the roundup once the decision is in. This saves them time to
get the roundup and removal of the tortoises finished by the deadline, right after that job
is finished, my prediction is the earthmovers, etc will rush in to get the ground tore up, to
qualify for the federal money by year end.

They are not worried about getting their wrists slapped for jumping the gun with the fence posts and staking, I mean does anyone really think the CEC as now constituted will impose any
meaningful penalty for this jumping in early? They have bigger fish to fry. I am telling you
the bottom line is get the facts established on the ground and get that money, whatever it takes.

I am so sad about the Tortoises-it is now 10/12/10 and they started moving them Friday.
they knew it was a done deal in August—the Tortoises were supposed to be protected.
The government should not have let this happen
we were deceived. We can’t let things like this continue once the Tortoise is gone it will be too late.
