[Update: the first draft of the list of Blog Against Racism Day participants is here.]
“The soul, equal and eternal, emanates from bodies of different shapes and colors. Whoever foments and spreads antagonism and hate between the races, sins against humanity.”
Welcome to Blog Against Racism Day! Here’s what it’s about. If you’re participating, feel free to trackback to this post, or leave a comment here with the URL of your post(s). I’ll do my best to compile a big list of posts later December 1 to help drive some traffic to your site.
(If you leave a comment with an URL, don’t fret if it goes into moderation. It’s supposed to. I’ll get to it ASAP.)
Update: a quick note on the commenting policy here. Feel free to express disagreements with posts if you like. Cordiality is always appreciated, but I understand flying off the handle: I do it myself once every eight or nine years or so. But trolling with vile hate speech — such as in the two wacko Holocaust denial-type comments I just deleted — will not be tolerated. I’ll be loose about the definition of “wacko,” but it’s my call. Play nice.
Updated again: Seems like a lot of people are having trouble tracking-back. The Trackback URL for this post is http://www.faultline.org/cgi-bin/mt-tb.cgi/1463 : try copying that and pasting it into your blog posting client in the “ping this URL” field or form or what-have you.
It will be rather late before I can compile your entries into a big handy directory — budget planning time at Earth Island, and I’m in meetings — so feel free to cruise some of the wonderful entries people have noted in comments here. Or check out what Technorati has to say on the subject.

Note:Many old comments were lost in a database crash in 2008. Some conversations may seem to make less sense than they would have. A few will make more sense now.
76 comments on "Blog Against Racism Day"Great idea. Just found out about it yesterday. I have a Frederick Douglas collage I’ll post and link back over here. Again, great idea. Never understood racism. Is it like some sort of athletic contest because we were born wearing different uniforms?
I put up a post. It’s a look back at:

Okay.

I am looking forward to reading more of the Blog Against Racism posts. Here is one from me:
http://www.kimberlyjoysnyder.com/?p=32
Also, it is World AIDS Day, on December 1st. Something worth keeping in mind.
My trackback ping doesn’t seem to be working, so here is mine I confess
Mine may not be so good, but I felt I needed to partipate and spread the word:
http://sciencepolitics.blogspot.com/2005/12/blog-against-racism-day.html
i felt like i could not add to the many wonderful voices out there, BUT i am fully in support and will be collecting links also and blogging them to help spread the word.

Hello — we tried to trackback to our posts, but I don’t think they went through. Here are our urls:
Magnus’s post: http://commeo.blogspot.com/2005/11/racism-from-southern-point-of-view.html
Bella’s post: http://commeo.blogspot.com/2005/11/three-part-harmony-blogging-against.html
I have no idea how to TrackBack because I’m not that cool. But my post is here:
http://pinklaura.blogspot.com/2005/12/blog-against-racism-day.html
It’s about Gwen Stefani and her use of Harajuku culture.
My Trackback didn’t work either!
Chris, I would love to see you collect all the links to all the posts of all the participants into a single post (a new one or as addendum to this one). Perhaps you can, then, send that collection to Blogarithimcly — the carnival of linkfests.
Thanks for a great idea, Chris. It made me think about the apparent racial homogeneity of American birding: http://www.10000birds.com/december2005.htm#12/1/05
done and done. Hard to pick a topic, even of More Obscure Forms of Racism, but trying to avoid things routinely covered elsewhere, like the racism in European soccer and police forces, or silent pressure to conform to white ideals of beauty, and to tie it in with my regular ranting.
I’m in. Check out what I’ve got at
http://primatejournal.blogspot.com
Thanks.
Thanks for this initiative. I’m looking forward visiting the blogs listed here over the course of the day.
I don’t have a blog (yet), so I’d like to take the opportunity here to say two things: I want to thank my mother for having the foresight and the guts to have me and my brothers crosstown bussed in Milwaukee (1976) to the McDowell Montessori school, one of the first public Montessoris in the U.S. I’d like to thank the McDowell Montessori for showing me at an early age what multiculturalism really means. They had a lot to work against. My neighborhood was composed of people of Slavic, Polish, and German descent, who not only made derogatory comments about each other, but especially against black people. If it hadn’t been for the intervention of the Montessori school, I have no idea what kind of person I would have grown up to be.
I wish I could eliminate those racial categories constructed for me when I was so very young. I have to spend every day working against them.
Mine’s just a little one, but it’s here.
I have no idea how to trackback (I included a link to this post in my post, is that a trackback? lol) so here is the link to my post.

Great idea, I was going to post this a few weeks ago, but decided to save it for today when I saw a link to you on Bitch PhD. Here’s my url:

Mine is the 2nd post because I’m sharing with World AIDS Day. (Let’s hope that linkage thing works since I’m still learning.)

I tried to trackback to your announcement, but I didn’t see it show up.
Here’s one I just found, and I’ll save the writer the time of posting it here:

I learned about this from Cassandra and have posted a contribution: http://andthistoo.blogspot.com/2005/12/blog-against-racism.html
i will presume to speak for many in offering my thanks to chris for blog against racism day, and to all of you listed here for your thoughtful and sometimes painful reminders of the elephant in the room.
In case the trackback doesn’t take, my Austin n’ racism post is here.

Hi Chris — wonderful idea you had — it’s fascinating reading everyone’s contribution. Mine is called Divided America — and I am proud to be included. By the way — I did some cross-posting on a few of the larger political blogs. Interesting responses — I mention them in relation to my article. Anyway — let’s hope this prompts some substantive discussions.
ditto on the no trackback, but here’s the link:

I wasn’t even thinking about BaRday when I posted a comment about Birmingham City Lines #2857 and December 1st, 1955 on <a>TSFR</a>, but it may be appropriate.

I’m a little late to the party, but my post is up now—my life story through a lens of race.
Dunno if my trackback went thru, but I wrote this contribution to Blog Against Racism day this morning:

Thanks Chris! Here is my post
Here’s my post.
Hello everyone! My contribution to this important day, “Racism: America’s disgraceful legacy,” is now up at Hughes for America.

I made a post too: http://animeg.blogspot.com/2005/12/well-its-blog-against-racism-day.html
Didn’t know it was Blog against Racism day — but as it happens I used a routine post to call out a columnist on his racism.
<a>About race as subjective.</a>
Here’s one more:

I attempted to write something about racism as it applies to AIDS. Fair warning, it’s quite ranty.
I’m late with this, but here’s my post: a tribute to the mothers of Anthony Walker and Emmett Till.

hrm. I tried to post this earlier, but I’ll try again:

My post is here:

Not sure my trackback has made it over here, so here’s my post about racism and sports: http://nikkiverse.net/bac/2005/12/elephant-in-room-blog-against-racism.html
I took part, thanks to someone I know who did the same. I hope it helps toward any efforts in the blogging community to erase such a horrible thing from the world. http://mrscoble.diaryland.com/noracism.html
My very first non-test blog post is here.
http://www.livejournal.com/users/syfr/613.html
I have no idea how to do trackbacks or any of that stuff, and I hope this will do.
Thanks for starting this, Chris.
I’m a little late to the party, but my post is up now—my life story through a lens of race.
Mine is here. Thanks for doing this!
I blog against racism almost everday… check out my site.
It’s still 10:22 PM here on the West Coast, so I hope this my post is still timely.
Here it is:
http://justanotherwhitegirl.blogspot.com/2005/12/i-know-today-is-world-aids-day-but-so.html
Pfft. When I wrote “Birmingham”, it was actually a _very_ creative way to write “Montgomery”. At least that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
(and the link was scrambled: it should be http://weblog.pell.portland.or.us/~orc/2005/12/01/000/index.html)
Here you go…

Thanks for the opportunity. Andy
I didn’t find out until now & can’t post anything but a link back here until tomorrow. I am fully in support of blogging against racism and hope it can at least be a yearly event on Dec 1st (it should be an everyday event). Thank you.
A photopoem/stanza from my autobiographic prose poem, Singing Bowls of Horizons, as a contribution of Blogging Against Racism. xo
I’ve done mine, although I didn’t get to it until the evening… crazy work day yesterday…
I’ve put up two posts — admittedly, a bit late, but better late than never.
Privilege is driving a smooth road and not even knowing it.
and
How Not To Be Insane When Accused Of Racism (A Guide For White People)
I’m late, but this is important so I posted anyway. With some urging. I blogged about racial stereotypes.
I’m late to this party as usual but wanted to get my name and url on file. I just heard about you from an online friend.
I’ll be back as soon as I have read a little more and have something to say.
Very late to this, but here’s mine:
http://www.magpienest.org/feathersofhope/949/blog-against-racism-day
Mine is a very small post, I am afraid, but I *did* blog against racism. Next year I will try to remember earlier and do something more substantive. It is an *excellent* idea.
After posting my comment earlier today, I was “flamed” for the first time in the 3 months I’ve had my small, family friendly, blog. Two words: racist c***.
It was probably coincidence; I’m political and liberal, everyone who knows me knows that, and I was bound to receive hate mail eventually. The word racist was not what I expected to hear however. I’m putting it out here only as an alert in the event that any of you are subjected to it as well.
If you’re interested in my response to “anonymous”, I can be found by clicking on the link.
This is a wonderful idea, we are all one people .
Peace and Love:)
The book “Why are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?” is great for understanding racism and the development of racial identity. I highly recommend this book to all people who want to counteract/eliminate racism.
Yeah I hate racism day too @_@
I put up a post for both World Aids Day and Blog Against Racism day. How Aids & Racism are Intimately Connected
